Consultation overview

Anti-doping rules help keep sport clean and fair

Anti-doping rules protect fair competition by helping to make sure all athletes compete on a level playing field. They also support athlete health and build trust in sport among athletes and fans.

New Zealand is a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code (the Code), which aims to make sure that anti-doping rules are fair and consistent across sports and countries.

There are big changes in 2027

The World Anti-Doping Code has recently been updated for 2027. The 2027 Code is the result of an extensive consultation process that involved athletes and anti-doping stakeholders from across the globe.

The 2027 Code features significant changes intended to make sure it has a stronger emphasis on human rights including fairness, privacy and athlete wellbeing. We must now reflect those changes in Aotearoa New Zealand’s 2027 Sports Anti-Doping Rules (2027 Rules), which are domestic secondary legislation and updated annually.

Your feedback will help make sure the 2027 Rules are suitable for our context and will help inform future updates to the World Anti-Doping Code.

Not all feedback can be implemented immediately

Some parts of the 2027 Code must be reflected in our 2027 Rules without significant changes. Other parts of the 2027 Sports Anti-Doping Rules can be adjusted to reflect our Aotearoa New Zealand context. We have made this distinction clear in the draft 2027 Rules that you will access. We are asking for feedback on both parts, but will deal with that feedback differently:

  • Feedback on things we can change: We’ll consider the feedback and apply as appropriate.

  • Feedback on things we can’t change: We’ll gather the feedback and submit it to WADA for their consideration in future iterations of the Code.

How to give feedback
