With consultation on the Integrity Code underway, we sat down to chat with some legends and leaders from the sporting world – all of whom happen to be board members here at the Sport Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui.
In this post, we chat to All-Black legend Keven Mealamu.

How sport shapes us
Sport has been a huge part of my life since I could run. Not just for the enjoyment of getting out and doing things, but also because of the connections you make along the way. I was lucky enough to carry that into playing sport professionally: it was a chance to play alongside amazing people and build relationships that will last for the rest of my life.
These days I also look at things from a governance viewpoint. From that perspective, it’s great to be a part of shaping how we should be looking after each other and conducting ourselves on the playing field and the sports court.
Sport through the lens of a parent
There are so many different lenses that I can use to look at sport, but being a parent is the main one for me. My kids love sport. They play rugby, cricket, touch, netball... they’ll play anything. It’s awesome to be on the sidelines and bleachers and watch them.
But as a dad, I can’t help asking myself, “Are my kids safe? Are they respected and looked after? Are they supported and encouraged?”

Why we should all have a say on the draft Integrity Code
It’s important that the Integrity Code speaks for all of us. We can see how diverse the sporting landscape is, but what should always be the same across that landscape is the care, value and safety we bring to this space.
In rugby we call this a common language, something that everyone understands. People’s experiences are different, and they have different ways of expressing themselves. An Integrity Code that speaks for us all is important because it brings together those views. When you give your feedback, you help us understand how you’re doing, what you’re seeing, what you’re hearing – and only then can we incorporate those answers. It’s also good for you because you have the chance to share what you think!
We want everyone to be a part of this and to feel a part of this. That’s why the consultation is so important. We want everyone to be involved.
