The Sports Tribunal of New Zealand has banned recreational cricket player Tayden Smit for four years for the possession and attempted use of anabolic steroid methandienone.
In late December 2025, NZ Customs intercepted a parcel addressed to Mr Smit that contained 100 x 50mg tablets of methandienone (dianabol). Mr Smit was provisionally suspended in May 2026 and took no part in subsequent proceedings.
Dianabol is an anabolic steroid that is banned in sport at all times under the World Anti-Doping Agency’s 2025 Prohibited List. It has no approved medical use in Aotearoa New Zealand, but is used in a doping context to reduce body fat and gain muscle mass.
Sport Integrity Commission Te Kahu Raunui Chief Executive Rebecca Rolls said that the case highlighted the often unseen consequences of buying banned substances online.
“Anti-doping rules apply to and protect athletes at all levels.”
“Buying banned substances online may seem low risk. The reality is that the consequences can be deeply harmful, affecting an athlete’s health, wellbeing, relationships and their future in the sport they love.”
Mr Smit’s four-year sanction is backdated to 26 May 2026. He is ineligible to compete in take part in competitive sport until 26 May 2030.
