Athlete sanctioned for two years for stimulant use

04 July 2025

The Sports Tribunal of New Zealand has banned a boxing athlete from all sport for two years for the possession and use of phentermine, a stimulant that is banned in sporting competitions.

The athlete tested positive for the substance after an in-competition test in June 2024. They later admitted to using the substance, though noted that its use was unrelated to sport performance and not during competition. The Sports Tribunal imposed a sanction of two years ineligibility on this basis.

Phentermine is a prescription medication used for weight loss due to its appetite suppressant effects. It is a non-specified substance included on the World Anti-Doping Prohibited List, meaning it is banned in sport. Phentermine is chemically related to amphetamines and acts as a central nervous system stimulant. An athlete intending to cheat may use it to increase alertness, reduce fatigue, and suppress appetite.

Sport Integrity Commission Chief Executive Rebecca Rolls emphasised the importance of anti-doping rules to keep sport safe and fair.

“The Sports Anti-Doping Rules apply to and protect athletes at all levels of competition. Everyone taking part deserves an even playing field and to know that their sport is free from the influence of banned substances.”
